It would be an intersectional battle as the Saranac Spartans would travel down to Glens Falls and the Glenns Falls Rec Center to take on the #8 Queensbury Spartans in what might be a preview of the state regional playoffs game next month. The Saranac Spartans would open the goal scoring as Ryan Campbell would get the goal three minutes in and take the 1-0 lead. Queensbury would return and get the game-tying goal just 2 minutes later, thanks to Ethan Kelsey, and tie the game at one. Then, just 93 seconds later, Ethan Kelsey would score again and give the home Spartans the 2-1 lead, and that's where the first period would end. When the teams returned for the second period, the Saranac Spartans would waste little time getting the equalizer as Ryan Campbell would get his second goal, and the game would be tied at two. The game would stay there til the 7:23 mark of the period when the Queensbury Spartans would answer again with two goals in 90 seconds and take the 4-2 lead on goals from Sean Culligan and Rhys Roberts, and that's how the second period would end. When the teams returned for the third period, the Queensbury Spartans would extend their lead to 5-2 just 1:01 into the period. The Saranac Spartans would try to make it interesting down the stretch as Ryan Campell would score at the 11:42 mark of the period to complete his hat trick on the night and make it a 5-3 game. From there, the Queensbury defense would clamp down as they got the win and went to 11-4-1 in the season. It would be Section VII Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Boy's Hockey action from the Saranac Lake Civic Center as the Saranac Spartans would have to travel there to take on the Saranac Lake/Lake Placid Lakers as we reach the second half of the conference season. The hometown Lakers would get the quick opening goal of the game when Will Landriault lit the lamp just 3:33 into the game as they would take the 1-0 lead On the powerplay. The Spartans would come back and tie the game at the 6:19 mark of the period when Ashton Catlin found the back of the net, and that's where the first period would end tied at one. When the teams returned for the second, Ashton Catlin would find the back of the night again for his second goal at the 3:19 mark of the period and take the 2-1 lead. Then, in the final two minutes of the period, the Spartans would go on a scoring spree they would, scoring three goals in 90 seconds from Ryan Campbell (twice) and Evan Patrie as the Spartans would take the 5-1 lead into the third period. When the teams returned for the third period, the Lakers would keep the hopes of a comeback alive as they would score just 2:34 into the period Ca.rson St Louis would find the net to make it a 5-2 game. From there, the Spartan's defense would clamp down and get the win. In the winning, Shawn Mclane would make 20 saves as they go to 9-5-1 on the season. This weekend, they were on the road for a pair of nonleague games, including taking the Queensbury Spartans and the Saratoga Blue Streaks. It would be the second annual Aimee McLane Memorial Scholarship game from the American North Sports Center; The #14 Saranac Spartans would be hosting the Plattsburgh Hornets as the teams would battle for the conference lead at the season's midpoint. The game would remain scoreless after the period, but not because of the lack of effort on the ice, as the Spartans would outshot the Hornets 16-6. The Hornets would get the game's opening goal at the 9:34 mark of the period when Braden Calkins would snip it by Shawn McLane for the first goal and make it a 1-0 game. Then, in the period's closing minute, the Hornets would get the all-important two-goal lead as Braden Calkins would find the net again for the second time and take the 2-0 lead into the intermission. When the team returned for the third period, both teams would go after it again as the Spartans were hoping for the early goal in the period to help down the stretch. The Spartans would get on the board, but it would be late at the 15:28 mark when Landon Giroux would score on the scramble play to make it a 2-1 game. However, this night, Plattsburgh Hornets Owen Chapple was up to the task as he would make 44 of 45 saves on the night as they go to 6-6-2 and will be back into action Friday night against the Beekmantown Eagles. It would be a rare regular-season meeting between a pair of top-ten-ranked teams in the state as the #10 Saranac Spartans would host the #3 and undefeated Ogdensburg Blue Devils from the American North Sports Center. The visiting #3 Blue Devils would waste little time getting the game's opening goal at the 3:45 mark of the first period when Tegan Frederick would light the lamp for the 1-0 lead. The Spartans would come firing back and tie the game at 7:17 of the period when Gabe Moore would snip the wrister to tie the game at one, which would be the only scoring of the period. The game would stay there till the 9:03 mark of the second period when Nate Irvine would find the back of the net and give the Blue Devils the 2-1 lead, and that's how the second period would end. Then, in the third period, the Blue Devils would extend their lead to 3-1 on Nate Irvine's second goal at 2:30. The Spartans returned 90 seconds later and made it a one-goal game again on the Ryan Campbell goal and made it 3-2. Although the one-goal game would be short-lived as just over a minute later, the Blue Devils would make it a two-goal game again when Rocco Testani would score and make it 4-2. From there, the Blue Devils' defense would finish off the Spartans and add an empty netter late in the game from Laughlin O'Donnell as they secured the 5-2 victory. In the winning effort, the Blue Devils would stay perfect on the season at 13-0 as Ty Jacobs would make 26 saves on the afternoon, and they will be back in action Tuesday as they take on the St. Lawerence Larries. As for the Saranac Spartans, Shawn McLane would make 32 saves in a losing effort as they fall to 8-4-1 on the season and will take on the Plattsburgh Hornets Tuesday in the Aimee McLane Memorial game. It would be the biggest rivalry in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference boys' hockey as it would be the first meeting of the year between the #10 Saranac Spartans and the Beekmantown Eagles from the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena in what might be the first of three meetings on the season as they have to meet for the title in 3 out of the last 4 year season. It would be a very physically hard-hitting game from the start as both teams were trying to show they were the dominant team on this day. Both teams would have their chances, but there would be no scoring in the first period. The Eagles would break and get the game's opening goal on the shorthand at the 11:36 mark of the period when Mason Carter would light the lamp and make it a 1-0 game in what would be the period's lone goal. The Spartans would keep coming and get the tying goal just 4:23 into the third period on the Jackson Coryer goal. The Eagles would return and get the lead again when Novak Jarus beat Shawn McLane at 11:29 to regain the lead at 2-1. Then, in the game's final minute, Edward Sweenor would add the empty netter to put the icing on the cake in the 3-1 victory. In the winning effort for the Eagles, they will go to 7-4-1 on the season as Jack Bell makes 31 saves in the win as they head into their nonleague game Friday against the Malone Huskies. As for the Spartans, they will look to get back on the winning way as they will play #3 Ogdensburg Blue Devils on Saturday.
