70th Season Openner Leon Gonyo Memorial at Airborne Park Speedway May 9th 2024

It would be the top three of the Leon Gonyo Memorial 40 with Tim Fuller (middle) the winner, Mario Clair (left) second and Felix Roy (right) third as they pose for their podium picture. It would be the start of the 2024 racing season from the Airborne Park Speedway and it would start with a whole new management crew as Mike Bruno and crew from Devils Bowl Speedway would now be running the track. They would start the 70th year of racing from the Airborne Park Speedway with the Leon Gonyo Memorial 40 lap 358 Modified race with $4,444 going to the winner and the Sportsman Modified would have 30 laps and $1,200 to win. Also in action would be the Renegades, Limited Sportsman Modified, and the Mini Stocks as there would be around 110 cars in the pits to get the season going. After the dust had settled from the heat races it would be off to the features on the night and it would start with the big one the Leon Gonyo Memorial 40 for the 358 Modified and would see Adam Pierson and Tim Fuller starting on the front and after a few early counts in the first 5 laps of the race it would be smooth sailing the rest of the way but that doesn't mean there wasn't battles all over the track for position. We would see Tim Fuller making a rare start at Airborne Park Speedway getting the win over a hard-charging Mario Clair that would see him come from ninth to second and rounding out the top three would be Felix Roy. Then we would have the Sportsman Modified going for $1,200 over thirty laps it would start with a battle upfront between Donovan Lussier and Gabriel Cyr but it would slowly see Lussier pull away for the win and Fire Swamp would round out the top three as he was trying to go back to back after winning at Devils Bowl last weekend in there season opener. Then we would have the Renegades for 20 laps and Travis Stokes and Levi Bombard would start on the front row but after an early race incident that would see them both restarting in the back after a spin. We would have a hard-charging Tylor Terry get the win as he came from tenth to win but it would not be without a battle between second-place finisher Nathaniel Guay as they would go side by side for many laps at the front and it would see Tylor's brother Josh Terry come from the 11th starting position to get the third place finish on the night. Then we would have the Limited Sportsman Modified for 20 and it would see Keith Pelkey go wire to wire for the win in his first-ever start in the division. The night would finish with a pair of features for the mini stocks as it would start with Nick Harden getting the win over Rick Doner in a tight battle along with Speedy Bressette in third. Then in the second feature, it would be Josh Blake who would get the win over JP Corrow and Kyle Hart to finish off the night of racing. The Thursday night Thunder show will return next week as the Renegades will be the main attraction with an extra distance race and $500 to win also in action will be the 358 Modifieds, Sportsman Modified, and the Mini Stocks on May 16th. Potsdam Sandstoners @ Plattsburgh Hornets April 25th 2024

Potsdam's Bryan Dillon (8) with the stick on the shot from Plattsburgh's Hayden Lozier (4) as the Sandstoners get the 7-5 win. It would be a matchup inside Section X Boy's Lacrosse as the Plattsburgh Hornets from Division 2 would host the Potsdam Sandstoners from Division 1 as the teams have reached the season's halfway mark. It would be a defensive tilt from both teams as it would be a low-scoring half as the Sandstoners would have the 3-1 lead at the end of the first half. When the teams returned for the third quarter the Sandstoners would get a pair of goals and make it a 5-1 game as they entered the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Hornets would do everything they could to prevent being upset as they would have a four-goal quarter but the Sandsstoners would answer back with a pair of goals to give the Sandstoners the 7-5 win. In the winning effort, the Sandstoners go to 3-5 on the season and are back in action Saturday as they play the Colton Pierrepont Colts. The Plattsburgh Hornets fall to 5-2 on the season and will look to get back in the winning way with a game at Massena on Monday evening. Gallery

Colton Pierrepont Colts @ Plattsburgh Hornets April 23rd 2024

Plattsburgh's Chase Laravia (21) with the jump shot for the goal over a pair of defenders for the Colton-Pierrepont Colts as the Hornets get the 20-5 victory. It would be Section X Lacrosse action from the Stafford Middle School in Plattsburgh as the Plattsburgh Hornets would be hosting the Colton-Pierrepont Colts in a mid-season affair as it would be a battle of one lose teams to see who would take control of the Division II lead. The game would start with both teams trading the lead back and forth in the first quarter and the Hornets would lead 4-3 after the first quarter. However, from there, the Hornets would take complete control of the game as they would go on a 16-2 run to finish the game and get the 20-5 victory. In the winning effort, the Hornets would take the Division's lead as they approach the midway part of the season at 5-1 as they head into their next match with the Potsdam Sandstoners on Thursday. As for the Colton-Pierrepont Colts, they fall to 2-2 on the season as they will play Saranac Lake/Lake Placid on Wednesday as they look to stay in contention in the standings. Gallery

Oswego State Lakers @ Plattsburgh State Cardinals April 19th 2024

Plattsburgh State's Ava Parsons (24) with the hard check on Oswego State's Sela Wiley (5) as she charges down the field. It would be SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse from the Plattsburgh State Cardinals as the Cardinals would host the Oswego State Lakers in their final home game of the season. The Cardinals would get the game's opening goal just 1:13 into the game on the Cynthia Barnosky goal, but the Lakers would answer the game with four unanswered goals to end the first quarter to make it a 4-1 game. In the second quarter, the Lakers would take control of the game with a 5-2 quarter to take the 9-3 lead at the half on a pair of Cardinals goals from Caitlin Nash and Erica Dickinson. When the teams would return for the second half the Lakers would shut down the Cardinals with a 9-0 half for the 18-3 Lakers win. With the Cardinals losing they fall to 3-11 on the season with one game left on the season as they will travel to Potsdam to take on the Bears. Gallery

Beekmantown Eagles @ Plattsburgh Hornets April 19th 2024

Plattsburgh's Nate Baker (4) makes contact on the pitch for his lone hit on the day as the Hornets get the 8-0 victory. It would be a matchup in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Baseball as it would be a matchup between longtime rivals the Plattsburgh Hornets and the Beekmantown Eagles. The game would remain scoreless until the 4th inning when the Hornets would strike first with a pair of singles led by Jack Sorrell to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead. Then again in the fifth inning, the Hornets would have another three-run inning to give the Hornets the 6-0 lead. Then the Hornets would conclude their scoring in the sixth inning with two runs for the 8-0 win. Warren Miller gave up one hit over six innings in the winning effort while striking out six and walking five. Carson Duval would lead the bats going 2-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs as they went to 5-0 on the season. As for the Eagles, they would suffer the loss going to 2-5 on the season. Gallery

Saranac Lake/Lake Placid Lakers @ Plattsburgh Hornets April 17th 2024

Plattsburgh's Shamus Bibeau (9) with the bounce shot that would beat Saranac Lake-Lake Placid's Charlie Wilson (1) for the goal. Section X Boy's Lacrosse action this afternoon from the Stafford Middle School Field would be as the Plattsburgh Hornets would host their fellow normal section vii opponent the Saranac Lake Placid Lakers. The game would start low scoring with the defenses being superior as the Hornets would have the slim 2-1 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Hornets would break out with a five-goal outburst and take control of the game at 7-2 at the half. When the teams returned for the third quarter the Lakers would make some changes and their defense would be on display as the Hornets would get the lone goal of the game for the 8-2 lead into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Lakers would do all they could to get back in the game with a 4-goal quarter. However, it would not be enough as the Hornets would hold on for the 9-6 victory. In the winning effort, the Hornets would go to 3-1 on the season as they head into their next game on Friday as they travel to St Lawerence to take on the Larries. Saranac Spartans @ Plattsburgh Hornets April 16th 2024

Saranac's Abby Liberty (9) slides under the tag of the Olattsburgh's pitcher and gets another run for the Spartans. It would be an early season matchup inside of the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Softball as the Plattsburgh Hornets would host the Saranac Spartans. The game would start well for the Spartans as they opened the first inning with three runs for the 3-0 lead. In the second inning, the Spartans would add another four running as they would start to take control with the 7-0 lead. In the third inning, they would break it out with a six-run inning and take the 13-0 lead. In the fourth inning, they would add another five runs to expand the lead to 18-0. Before adding a single run in the fifth to secure the 19-0 win. In the winning effort, the Saranac Spartans stay undefeated on the season while the Plattsburgh Hornets suffer their first loss of the season and go to 2-1 on the season. Gallery

Ogdensburg Blue Devils @ Plattsburgh Hornets April 15th 2024

Plattsburgh's Owen Pray (54) with the catcher save on the high shot from Ogdensburg's Nate Irvine (1) to keep the Hornets in the game. It would be the third game of the season for the Plattsburgh Hornets and the Ogdensburg Blue Devils in Section X Boy's Lacrosse action and the first true home game for the Hornets after a neutral site game against Canton to start the season and then on the road to the Malone Huskies. It would be home cooking for the Hornets as they would jump out to a quick 4-0 lead over the Blue Devils just 90 seconds into the game. However, from there the Blue Devils would come out firing, go on a 9-1 run, and take the 9-5 lead at the intermission. When the teams returned for the second half the Hornets would start the second half where they started the first and go on a 5-1 run and tie the game at ten. However, the tables would turn again on the Hornets as the Blue Devils would finish on a 4-1 run and get the 14-11 victory. In the winning effort for the Ogdensburg Blue Devils go to 2-1 on the season. While the Plattsburgh Hornets suffer their first loss of the season and go to 2-1 on the season. The Blue Devils will look to continue their winning way with a matchup tomorrow against Potsdam. While the Plattsburgh Hornets will look to right the ship with their matchup Wednesday against the Saranac Lake/Lake Placid Lakers at Stafford Middle School. Gallery

ECAC Tournament Championship: #2 Cornell Big Red Vs #7 St. Lawerence Saints March 23rd 2024

The Cornell Big Red are crowned the 2024 ECAC Hockey champions for the first time in 14 years as they defeat the St. Lawerence Saints 3-1. It would be championship time in Lake Placid, NY, and the famed Herb Brooks Arena in front of 4,912 fans to settle the ECAC Hockey Conference champion and it would feature the #2 Cornell Big Red going after their first title since 2010. The #7 St Lawerence Saints are going after their first title since 2001 and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Big Red would get the opening answer of the game at the 6:15 mark of the first period on Jonathan Castagna's tenth goal of the season for the 1-0 Big Red lead. The game would stay there till the 5:13 mark of the second period when the Big Red and Jonathan Castagna would strike again for a 2-0 lead and that is how the second period would end. The Saints not wanting their Cinderella run to end would come out firing in the third period and cut the lead to 1 on the Cameron Buhl goal only his 4th of the season at the 4:15 mark. Coming down the streak the Saints would keep fighting for that equalizer and have the chance to tie the game. Although with the extra attacker on the ice, the Big Red would seal the game with the Jack O'Leary empty net goal to give the Big Red the 3-1 win and their first championship in 14 years. In the winning effort of the Big Red, Ian Shane would make 31 saves as the Cornell Big Red advanced to the NCAA Tournament. As for the St Lawerence Saints, their season will end a little short of their goal as Ben Kraws would have 26 saves as they finish at 14-19-6. Gallery

ECAC Tournament Semi-Finals: #1 Quinnipaic Bobcats Vs #7 St Lawerence Saints March 22nd 2024

St. Lawerence's Ben Kraws (31) with a save right to the chest off the stick of Quinnipiac's Anthony Cipollone (18) as they looked to get on the board. It is that time of year as we head back to Lake Placid, NY, and the Herb Brooks Arena for the ECAC Championship weekend for the 20th edition that would take place in Lake Placid and the first game of the semi-finals night would see the #1 Quinnipiac Bobcats and the #7 St Lawerence Saints in front of around 4,000 fans. The game would be scoreless through the first period with the teams each getting six shots on net. In the second period the Cinderella team of the tournament the Saints would get the 1-0 lead 7:43 into the period on Tomas Mazura's goal only his sixth of the season. The Saints wouldn't be done though just about four minutes later they would score again this time on the Powerplay from Max Dorrington for only second on the season and take the 2-0 lead and that's how the second period would end. In the third period the Saint's defense would be up to the challenge as they would be able to stop all that the Bobcats would throw at them and get an empty netter in the closing minute of the game from Ty Naaykens for the 3-0 win. With the win the Saint's dream playoff season will continue for one more night as they advance to the championship tomorrow night against the winner of the Cornell Big Red and the Dartmouth Big Green for the right to head to the NCAA Tournament. In the winning effort, the Saint's Ben Kraws would make 22 saves for the shutout victory as they go to 14-8-6 on the season while the Quinnipiac Bobcats will wait for there at large bid Sunday and go to 26-9-2 on the season.
